To see hidden replies on Twitter, open the original post and tap the hidden reply icon, which X shows only when replies are hidden.
This works for anyone on X (Twitter), in the app or on x.com, because hidden replies are moved, not deleted. You also get how hiding works, whether the replier is told, and what X's API can do.
The whole route, in three moves:
1. Open the original post, not one of its replies.
2. Tap the hidden reply icon at the bottom right of that post.
3. Read the hidden replies. You can reply to them from there.
How to see hidden replies on Twitter
X's Help Center puts it plainly, in a copy saved on 18 September 2026: "Everyone can still access hidden replies through the hidden reply icon." That icon shows up on the original post only when it has hidden replies.
No icon means there are no hidden replies to show. The icon works in the X app and on x.com, but X says the feature is "not available on X Pro."
The hidden replies open on a page of their own. X says you can reply to them from there.
How to hide replies on X, and unhide them
Only the post's author can hide replies under it. X's Help Center gives these steps:
- Open a reply to your postTap its more icon.
- Select Hide replyConfirm, and the reply moves behind the icon.
- Unhide it any timeHidden reply icon, the reply's more icon, Unhide reply.
This works on your own posts only. To hide replies from code, X's API has an endpoint, covered below.
Does X tell someone when you hide their reply?
No. X's Help Center says "the author of the reply will not be notified," and X's API quickstart says the same.
The reply isn't deleted either. It stays public behind the icon.
X adds one twist. In the Home timeline, a hidden reply turns into a notice saying the post is unavailable, but only once someone else replies to it.
Hidden replies vs "Show probable spam"
Missing replies aren't always hidden ones. X's Help Center describes two different things:
| What | Hidden replies | Probable spam |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | The post's author | X |
| Based on | The author's choice | Past behavior and content |
| Where they sit | The hidden reply icon | A Show probable spam button |
So if a post shows more replies than you can see, check both. X also says replies aren't always in time order, since it ranks them.
Search has filters of its own, covered in our guide to why X search isn't showing all results.
Hidden replies in the X API
X's API lets an author hide replies, but only in conversations they started. This is the call from X's Hide Replies docs:
curl -X PUT "https://api.x.com/2/tweets/1234567890/hidden" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $USER_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"hidden": true}'
It answers {"data": {"hidden": true}}, and "hidden": false unhides. What X's docs say, as of October 2026:
- Who can call it: the author of the conversation, through a developer App.
- Auth: a user token, by OAuth 1.0a, or OAuth 2.0 with the
tweet.read,users.readandtweet.moderate.writescopes. - Rate limit: 50 requests per 15 minutes for each user.
Can you read hidden replies by API? X's docs don't say. Its Conversation ID page says a conversation_id: search "returns all replies to the original post," with no word on hidden ones. X's data dictionary has no hidden field on a post either.
What Weir's replies tool returns
We run Weir, a read-only API for public X data. Its replies endpoint returns the replies under a post, replies to replies included, at 1 credit per call plus 1 per reply.
Weir's docs don't mention hidden replies. Weir reads the reply list X serves with a post, and it has no call for X's hidden replies page. So expect hidden replies to be missing.
To save the replies you can see to a sheet, follow our guide to exporting tweet replies.
Why can't I see hidden replies?
- There's no icon on the post. Nothing is hidden there, so check X's Show probable spam button.
- You opened a reply. X puts the icon on the original post, the one that started the conversation.
- The reply came from a protected account. X leaves those off the hidden replies page.
- Your app is X Pro. X says the feature isn't available there. Use the X app or x.com.
- Its author deleted it. Deleted replies drop off the page too.
- You hid it, then they muted or blocked you. X says you can't view or unhide that reply.
When not to use Weir
- Reading hidden replies is the goal. Tap X's icon; Weir doesn't promise them.
- You want to hide or unhide replies. Weir only reads, so use X's API with your own token.
- One post is all you need. The X app shows everything, hidden replies included, for free.
FAQ
How do you hide replies on X?
Open a reply to your own post, tap its more icon, select Hide reply and confirm. Only the post's author can do this. To undo it, open the hidden reply icon and select Unhide reply from that reply's menu.
Does Twitter notify someone when you hide their reply?
No. X's Help Center and its API docs both say the author of a hidden reply is not notified. The reply stays public behind the hidden reply icon, and you can unhide it at any time.
