Use Reddit and X Data in Claude (claude.ai, Desktop and Claude Code)

Use Reddit and X data in Claude via a custom connector or a Claude Code MCP server: setup by plan, sign-in, the tools Claude calls, and costs.

By Tarun Khatri · · 7 min read

To use Reddit and X data in Claude, add Weir's remote MCP server (https://api.weirapp.io/mcp) as a custom connector in claude.ai, or with one claude mcp add command in Claude Code, then sign in once. After that Claude can search Reddit and X, read whole comment trees and threads, and pull profiles and timelines by itself whenever a question calls for it. This guide covers setup for each plan, how sign-in works, which tools get called, what typical tasks cost, and the problems people actually run into.

Weir is our product. It reads public data only, and it isn't affiliated with Reddit or X.

What you can do with Reddit and X data in Claude

Some prompts that work well, and the tools Claude usually reaches for:

  • Community research. "What do people in r/selfhosted dislike about Tailscale? Quote the top complaints from the last month." Claude calls search_reddit with a subreddit, time: "month" and sort: "top", then get_reddit_comments on the two or three biggest threads.
  • Launch reaction. "How did X react to the latest Bun release? Separate praise from complaints." Claude calls search_x with minLikes and since, then get_x_replies on the most-discussed post.
  • Competitor digest. "Summarise what @vercel posted this week and which posts got the most replies." Claude calls get_x_user_posts.
  • Long-form reading. "Summarise this X Article" with a link. Claude calls get_x_article, which returns the full body. The post itself only carries a t.co link (more on X Articles).
  • Research mode. Claude's Research feature can use connector tools without asking for approval each time. That's useful for broad questions, but Anthropic's own connector guide asks you to "be mindful of the impact of Claude sending a large number of requests", and each request here spends credits.

Set it up in claude.ai and Claude Desktop

According to Anthropic's custom connector guide, custom connectors using remote MCP work on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free accounts can add one.

Pro and Max (and Free)

  1. Open Customize > Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Weir, enter https://api.weirapp.io/mcp and click Continue.
  4. Review the authentication settings Claude detected and leave them as they are. For Authentication, "Sign in now" or "Sign in when needed" both work. For OAuth client, the recommended "Use Claude's published identity" works with Weir.
  5. Click Add. Weir's consent screen opens: sign in, review the access requested and approve.

Team and Enterprise

An Owner or Primary Owner sets up the connector once for the organization. On Enterprise, members whose custom role includes managing libraries can do it too:

  1. Go to Organization settings > Connectors, click Add, hover over Custom and pick Web.
  2. Enter the name and URL, then step through authentication as above.

Members then open Customize > Connectors, find Weir under the Custom label and click Connect. Each member signs in to their own Weir account, so their usage goes to their own credits.

Desktop and mobile

There's nothing extra to set up. A connector added on claude.ai follows your account to Claude Desktop and the mobile apps. Claude reaches it from Anthropic's cloud, not from your computer. That's why claude_desktop_config.json, which is only for local servers, is the wrong place for this URL.

To check it works, start a chat and ask "What's my Weir usage?" Claude should call get_usage, which is free. You can switch the connector on or off per conversation from the + menu, under Connectors.

Using an API key instead of sign-in

Claude's connector dialog now has a Request headers section for fixed credentials, but Anthropic's docs say it's "in beta and available to a limited set of organizations". If you have it, choose No sign-in, add an authorization header and enter the value as Bearer weir_live_.... Claude sends the value exactly as typed, so leave out Bearer and the request fails.

For most people, OAuth is the better choice. On Team and Enterprise plans a header credential is shared: everyone using the connector spends that one key's credits. You also can't edit headers later. You have to remove the connector and add it again.

Set it up in Claude Code

Claude Code connects from your machine, and the setup is one command:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user weir https://api.weirapp.io/mcp

--scope user makes Weir available in every project. Leave it out to use the default local scope, which covers only the current project, or use --scope project to write a shared .mcp.json into the repo (Claude Code MCP docs). Then run /mcp in a session, pick weir and finish signing in in the browser. claude mcp login weir does the same thing from your shell.

If you're signed in to Claude Code with the same claude.ai account, a connector you already added on claude.ai shows up in /mcp anyway, marked as coming from claude.ai. You don't need both.

Headless runs. claude -p, CI and the Agent SDK can't open a browser, so give them a Weir API key from API keys. Put this in a project .mcp.json. Claude Code expands ${WEIR_API_KEY} from the environment when it connects, so the key itself never sits in the file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "weir": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.weirapp.io/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${WEIR_API_KEY}" }
    }
  }
}

Large outputs. Claude Code warns when one MCP tool result passes 10,000 tokens and caps results at 25,000 by default (MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS). A 100-comment Reddit thread can get close, so ask for fewer comments, or a lower depth, before raising the cap.

How sign-in works

Weir uses OAuth 2.1. When you approve, Weir issues the client a token that can read Reddit and X, see your usage and read your monitors. Tools that create monitors or webhooks only appear if you tick that access on the consent screen, because a monitor keeps spending credits after the chat ends. Every approved connection appears under API keys as <client> (MCP), and revoking it there disconnects that client. No tool can post, like or follow.

What it costs

Each tool call costs 1 credit plus a per-result rate. Failed calls are free. The MCP search tools return 10 results unless the model asks for more.

Task Calls Credits
Check balance get_usage 0
10 Reddit posts search_reddit (1 + 3 per post) 31
20 comments from one thread get_reddit_comments (1 + 3 per comment) 61
20 X posts search_x (1 + 1 per post) 21
An account's last 20 posts get_x_user_posts (1 + 2 for the profile + 1 per post) 23
The "community research" prompt above (1 search, 2 threads) search_reddit + 2 x get_reddit_comments 153

Every account gets 5,000 free credits a month, which covers about 30 research prompts like the last row. After that, packs start at $5 for 25,000 credits, and those credits never expire. So 153 credits works out to about 3 cents at the smallest pack, as of October 2026. All the rates are on pricing.

Troubleshooting

  • "Couldn't connect" in claude.ai. Claude connects from Anthropic's cloud, so only public URLs work. Check that the URL is exactly https://api.weirapp.io/mcp, with no trailing /sse. A URL ending in /sse makes Claude pick the older transport.
  • Free plan won't let you add Weir. Free allows one custom connector. Remove the other one first.
  • Team members don't see an "Add custom connector" button. On Team plans, only Owners can add one. Members connect to it after an Owner has added it.
  • Claude answers from memory instead of calling Weir. Make sure the connector is on for this chat (+ > Connectors), or name it in the prompt: "Use Weir to search Reddit for...".
  • A tool returns 402. The account is out of credits. Retrying won't help: add credits under Billing or wait for the monthly grant.

FAQ

Does it work in Claude Desktop without the web app? Yes. Add the connector once while signed in to your Claude account and it's available in Desktop and the mobile apps too.

Can Claude post to X or reply on Reddit through Weir? No. Weir is read-only.

Does Claude search Reddit and X together? They're separate tools. For a cross-platform question Claude makes two calls and compares the results itself.

Is Weir in Claude's Connectors Directory? No. You add it as a custom connector by URL.

Does this break if Reddit or X change their access? It can. Weir isn't licensed by Reddit or X, and any third-party tool can be affected by platform changes.
