Connect Reddit and X Data to ChatGPT
Connect Reddit and X data to ChatGPT with a custom MCP server: which plans support it, the Plugins setup, Business and Enterprise admin steps, and costs.

To connect Reddit and X data to ChatGPT, add Weir's remote MCP server (https://api.weirapp.io/mcp) as a custom MCP server from ChatGPT Plugins, choose OAuth, and sign in. Then you can @mention it in a chat and ChatGPT will search Reddit and X, read threads and pull profiles. As of October 2026 the full flow is for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces on the web, and Pro accounts get a read-only version. This guide covers both, plus what admins need to do and what a typical request costs.
Weir is our product. It isn't in OpenAI's plugin directory: you add it yourself as a custom MCP server. It reads public data only and isn't affiliated with Reddit or X.
Which ChatGPT plans can connect Reddit and X data
From OpenAI's help article on custom MCP servers, as of October 2026:
| Plan | Custom MCP servers |
|---|---|
| Business | Yes, full MCP. Only admins and owners can create and publish them |
| Enterprise / Edu | Yes, full MCP. Admins and owners, plus members granted the permission through RBAC |
| Pro | "Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions" |
| Plus, Free | Not listed in the article |
| Mobile apps (any plan) | "No - web only" |
Read-only is enough for Weir. Every data tool is a read, and the tools are annotated as read-only. On Pro, the opt-in tools that create monitors or webhooks are write actions, so don't expect to use them there.
What you can do
- Customer research. "@Weir find Reddit threads from the past month where people compare Linear and Jira, and list the reasons people switched." ChatGPT calls
search_reddit, thenget_reddit_commentson the threads that look most useful. - Social proof check. "@Weir what are developers on X saying about Cloudflare Workers this week? Only posts with 20+ likes." That's
search_xwithminLikes: 20andsince. - Account summary. "@Weir summarise @stripe's last 20 posts by theme." That's
get_x_user_posts. - Deep research. OpenAI's article says deep research "can use custom apps, but for read/fetch actions only", which suits Weir. A deep research run can make many calls, so set a scope in the prompt ("at most 3 searches, 10 results each").
- Follow-ups. When a follow-up needs new data,
@mentionWeir again. OpenAI says app selection "applies to the message where you use it". Asking about results already in the chat doesn't need another mention.
Set it up: Pro, or a Business/Enterprise admin
These are the current steps from OpenAI's connect guide. Developer Mode isn't needed any more.
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, click the + button and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Enter the name
Weirand, if you like, a description such as "Public Reddit and X data". - Under Connection, enter
https://api.weirapp.io/mcp. You don't need a tunnel because it's a public HTTPS endpoint. - For authentication, choose OAuth. Weir supports dynamic client registration, so there's no client ID to paste.
- Read the risk warning and tick I understand and want to continue.
- Choose Create as a plugin. ChatGPT connects, sends you to Weir's consent screen (sign in and approve), and lists the tools it found. Check that
search_reddit,search_xandget_usageare there. - Install the plugin, start a new chat, type
@and pick Weir.
To check it works, ask "@Weir what's my Weir usage?" It should call get_usage, which costs nothing.
Business and Enterprise: publishing to the workspace
Creating the plugin only makes it yours. To give the rest of the workspace access:
- Permission. In workspace settings, the relevant permission is Create plugins with MCPs. On Business, only admins and owners hold it. On Enterprise/Edu, admins can grant it to selected members through RBAC, but only admins and owners can publish.
- Publish. Test it privately first, then publish. On Enterprise/Edu, the publish dialog has Configure Actions, where you choose which tools are allowed, and Configure Access, where you choose which groups can use it. Turning off tools you don't want, such as the monitor tools, is a cheap way to keep spending predictable.
- Updates are not automatic. OpenAI says ChatGPT uses a "frozen" snapshot of a server's tools once an admin approves it. When Weir adds or changes a tool, an admin has to Refresh the tool list. On Enterprise, new actions arrive switched off and changes show as a diff.
- Whose credits. Calls are charged to the Weir account that signed in. Before rolling it out, decide whether people should use their own Weir accounts or a shared team account.
How sign-in works
ChatGPT uses OAuth with Weir. Weir advertises offline_access and always issues refresh tokens, which OpenAI's article recommends so that ChatGPT doesn't "lose access after the original authorization expires". On the consent screen you're granting read access to Reddit and X, your usage, and your monitors. Creating monitors and webhooks is an extra checkbox, off by default. Each connection appears under API keys as ChatGPT (MCP) or similar, and revoking it there cuts ChatGPT off.
There's no API key option in the ChatGPT UI. If you're building on the OpenAI API instead, the Responses API's MCP tool takes a bearer key in headers (Weir's frameworks docs).
What it costs
Each call costs 1 credit plus a per-result rate. The search tools return 10 results unless ChatGPT asks for more, and a failed call costs nothing.
| Request | Typical calls | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| "What's my Weir usage?" | get_usage |
0 |
| The Linear vs Jira research prompt | search_reddit (10 posts) + 2 x get_reddit_comments (20 each) |
31 + 122 = 153 |
| The Cloudflare Workers prompt | search_x (20 posts) |
21 |
| The @stripe summary | get_x_user_posts (20 posts) |
23 |
The free tier's 5,000 credits a month cover dozens of prompts like these. After that, the smallest pack is $5 for 25,000 credits (as of October 2026), so the research prompt costs about 3 cents. A deep research run can make many more calls than a normal chat. Check your balance afterwards with get_usage. Rates: pricing.
Troubleshooting
- No "Add custom MCP server" option. Your plan or role doesn't allow it. On Business, ask an admin or owner. On Enterprise/Edu, ask for the Create plugins with MCPs permission. Plus and Free aren't listed as supported.
- Weir works on desktop web but not the phone app. Expected. OpenAI says custom MCP servers are web only.
- Tool calls error after Weir ships a change. The workspace is using a frozen snapshot. An admin opens the plugin and selects Refresh, then republishes if asked.
- ChatGPT answers without calling Weir. Select Weir with
@in that message. The selection doesn't carry over to later messages that need new data. - A tool returns
402. The Weir account is out of credits. Retrying won't fix it: add credits under Billing or wait for the monthly grant.
FAQ
Is Weir an official ChatGPT app? No. It isn't listed in OpenAI's directory. You connect it as a custom MCP server, and OpenAI's article says you're responsible for vetting servers you add.
Can ChatGPT post to X or Reddit through Weir? No. Weir has no write tools for either platform.
Does it work in ChatGPT's desktop apps? OpenAI documents the setup for ChatGPT on the web and says mobile isn't supported. We haven't confirmed desktop app behaviour, so start on chatgpt.com.
Can I use it with Codex? Yes, through Codex's own MCP config. See coding agents.
Next steps
Create a free account, add the server from Plugins, and run the usage check. The same server works in Claude and Cursor. This comparison covers alternatives such as X's own MCP server.
