How X counts characters

Xโ€™s counting rules give a post 280 weighted characters:

X counts text after Unicode normalization, so an accented letter typed as two code points still counts once. This counter follows the weights in Xโ€™s open-source twitter-text library, and we checked it against that library on thousands of sample posts.

Turn long text into a thread

Tick Split into a thread and the text is cut between words into posts that each fit, with 1/3-style numbers if you want them. To save a posted thread as Markdown, see the Twitter thread API guide. To plan a search for posts like yours, try the X advanced search builder.

Questions

Why does X count my post differently from a normal character counter?

X weighs characters. Latin letters, numbers and common punctuation count 1, while emojis, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and most other symbols count 2. Every link counts 23, however long it is.

Do links count toward the 280 characters?

Yes, as 23 characters each, because X wraps every link in its t.co shortener. That includes bare domains such as example.com.

Do photos, videos or the @mentions in a reply count?

No. X's docs say attached media counts 0, and the @mentions X adds at the start of a reply don't count. An @mention you type yourself counts as normal text.

How long can a post be with X Premium?

Up to 25,000 characters, per X's Help Center page on Premium. Tick the X Premium box to count against that limit instead of 280.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The count runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves the page.
