APA 7

NASA [@NASA]. (2026, April 7). Hello, Moon. It’s great to be back. [Image attached] [Post]. X. https://x.com/NASA/status/2041557036274475228

In text: (NASA, 2026), or NASA (2026).

MLA 9

NASA [@NASA]. Photo of "Hello, Moon. It’s great to be back." X, 7 Apr. 2026, x.com/NASA/status/2041557036274475228.

In text: (NASA).

How to cite a tweet

Both styles now call a tweet a post and the site X. APA 7 uses the first 20 words of the post as the title, in italics, and adds [Post]. MLA 9 quotes the whole post and puts X in italics. Keep the post’s own spelling, hashtags and emoji.

These formats follow university library guides to APA 7 and MLA 9, such as the University of Auckland’s APA guide and its MLA guide. Your instructor or journal has the final word.

Getting the date right

A post’s id holds the moment it was made, so you never have to hunt for the date. Our tweet ID to date converter shows the full time to the millisecond. Cite the original post rather than a repost, and if the post has since been edited, cite the version you read.

Questions

How do I cite a tweet in APA 7?

Give the name and handle, the date, the first 20 words of the post in italics, any attachment in brackets, then [Post], X and the link: NASA [@NASA]. (2026, April 7). Hello, Moon. It’s great to be back. [Image attached] [Post]. X. https://x.com/NASA/status/2041557036274475228

How do I cite a tweet in MLA 9?

Give the name and handle, the full text in quotation marks, X in italics, the date and the link: NASA [@NASA]. "Hello, Moon. It’s great to be back." X, 7 Apr. 2026, x.com/NASA/status/2041557036274475228.

Where does the date come from?

From the post id. Every X post id since November 2010 carries the time it was made, to the millisecond. X shows that time in your own time zone, so switch the date to your time zone if a post is close to midnight.

What about Chicago or Harvard?

Their rules for X posts differ between guides and institutions, so we don't generate them. Use your library's guide, or ask your instructor which form they want.

Is anything sent anywhere?

No. The citation is built in your browser from the link and text you paste.
