The formulas

X’s post activity dashboard defines engagement rate as engagements divided by impressions, and its engagements include every click on the post. Only the post’s author sees those clicks, so for anyone else’s post the public counts are what you can use.

Comparing accounts

Add up the counts across an account’s recent posts and enter the totals to get its average, then do the same for a competitor. To judge the result, see what a good engagement rate is. Each post on X shows its counts, and the X advanced search builder finds an account’s posts for a date range. To check a draft’s length before you post, try the Twitter character counter.

Questions

How do you calculate engagement rate on Twitter?

Add up the engagements, then divide by views for the rate per view, or by followers for the rate per follower. This calculator counts likes, reposts, replies and quotes, and bookmarks unless you untick them.

Why is X's own engagement rate higher than this one?

X's post activity dashboard counts every click on a post as an engagement, including link clicks, profile clicks and post expansions, and divides by impressions. Those clicks are private, so a rate worked out from public counts leaves them out and comes out lower.

Should I divide by views or by followers?

By views to judge how a post did with the people who saw it, and by followers to compare accounts of different sizes. Views include people who don't follow the account, so the two rates tell you different things.
