Where a deleted post can still show up

Archives keep pages they captured before a deletion: the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and archive.today. Old posts were captured under twitter.com, so the finder checks that address as well as x.com. Our guide on how to see deleted tweets covers what still works.

On X, quote posts and replies are separate posts, and they usually stay up after the original goes. The finder builds the quoted_tweet_id: and conversation_id: searches for you, and a search of the author’s other posts that day, using the date in the post id. Our search operators guide explains each one.

Use it to check, not to republish

Checking whether a post existed is routine for journalists and researchers. Republishing other people’s deleted posts is a different matter, and X’s developer rules ask apps to remove posts their authors deleted. For your own posts, your X archive keeps recently deleted ones; open it with our Twitter archive viewer.

Questions

Can you see a deleted tweet?

Not on X itself. A deleted post is gone from X and from its search. What can survive is an archived copy, if someone saved the page before it went, and posts that quoted or replied to it.

Does the Wayback Machine have every tweet?

No. It only has the pages someone or something captured, so most posts were never saved. Busy, newsworthy posts are the most likely to have a copy.

Why do the quote and reply searches help?

Quotes and replies are separate posts. When the original is deleted they usually stay up, and quote posts often show or repeat what the original said.

Is my input sent anywhere?

No. The links are built in your browser. Nothing is fetched until you open one.
