OpenClaw Twitter: Read X Posts Without an X Developer App

Set up OpenClaw Twitter reading with Weir's MCP server in two commands, then see a real X digest and what each task costs next to the X API.

To give OpenClaw Twitter access with no X developer app, add Weir's MCP server and sign in once.

OpenClaw, the open-source assistant you run on your own hardware, can then search X (Twitter) and read posts, threads, Lists and profiles. It only reads, so it never posts as you. We run Weir.

openclaw mcp add weir \
  --url https://api.weirapp.io/mcp \
  --transport streamable-http \
  --auth oauth
openclaw mcp login weir

OpenClaw Twitter setup: add Weir's MCP server

To connect OpenClaw to Twitter, add Weir as a remote MCP server. OpenClaw has its own MCP client, so there's nothing to install beyond a free Weir account.

  1. Stop the GatewayThe add and login commands won't run while it holds your config, so type openclaw gateway stop first.
  2. Add WeirPaste the add command above. It saves Weir under mcp.servers in your OpenClaw config.
  3. Sign inopenclaw mcp login weir prints a link. Open it, sign in to Weir and approve.
  4. Check the toolsopenclaw mcp doctor weir --probe connects and lists Weir's tools.
  5. Ask the free questionStart the Gateway with openclaw gateway start and ask "What's my Weir usage?" The agent calls get_usage, which costs nothing.

Prefer the browser? In the Control UI, open Settings, then MCP, then Add server. Name it weir, pick Streamable HTTP and paste the URL. Then set auth to oauth in the config editor below and click Sign in.

Only want X? Add --include 'search_x*,get_x_*,get_usage' to the add command. Your agent then sees Weir's X tools and none of the Reddit ones.

Rather use a key? Put WEIR_API_KEY=weir_live_... in ~/.openclaw/.env, then save Weir with a header instead of a sign-in:

openclaw mcp set weir '{"url":"https://api.weirapp.io/mcp","transport":"streamable-http","headers":{"Authorization":"Bearer ${WEIR_API_KEY}"}}'

OpenClaw fills in the key when it connects, so the key itself stays out of your config file.

Can OpenClaw read Twitter? A real digest

Yes. With Weir connected, OpenClaw picks the right tool and its arguments by itself.

You ask, in WhatsApp, Telegram or Slack: "Send me the top posts from @OpenAI and @XDevelopers since Tuesday, one line each with links."

OpenClaw calls search_x with fromUsers, since and sort: "top". Here is that call, run through Weir's MCP server on 22 October 2026:

→ search_x {"fromUsers": ["XDevelopers", "OpenAI"], "since": "2026-10-20T00:00:00Z",
            "sort": "top", "onlyOriginal": true, "limit": 5}
← 4 posts · 5 credits (1 + 4 × 1)
7,041 @OpenAI We've acquired Orchestra Bio, a platform that helps biopharma teams...
5,382 @OpenAI ...we have packaged a Codex skill to help check.
4,182 @OpenAI GPT-Rosalind surfaced a new lead for drug discovery...
11,746 @OpenAI OpenAI models helped researchers ... discover critical security flaws in PHP...

All four came from @OpenAI. X's "top" order isn't sorted by likes, so the most-liked post came last.

Make it daily. Ask from the chat where you want it: "Send me this every morning at 8." OpenClaw's built-in scheduler saves the job and delivers each run to that chat.

What does reading X in OpenClaw cost?

Weir bills a credit per call plus a credit per X post, and failed calls are free.

5credits for the digest above
21credits for a 20-post search
0credits for get_usage
5,000free credits every month

Paid packs start at $5 and never expire, as of October 2026. See pricing for every rate.

Say your digest pulls 10 posts every morning. Here is that month on each route:

300 posts a month (a daily 10-post digest), as of October 2026
X API, via the xurl skill$1.50
Weir, $5 pack$0.07
Weir, free credits$0

OpenClaw Twitter skill or MCP server: which fits?

Pick by job: posting needs your own X app, and reading doesn't.

Weir MCP server xurl skill Cookie skill
Own X app Not needed Required Not needed
20-post search About $0.004 $0.10 No fee
Can post No Yes Varies
Your X account Never used Used via the API Used as your login

We run Weir, so weigh our view. If your agent must post, the xurl skill is the right tool.

The xurl skill ships with OpenClaw. It wraps xurl, X's official command-line tool, which needs your own developer app. X's pricing page lists $0.005 per post read as of October 2026. New accounts can earn up to $70 in one-time credits after a first purchase.

Cookie skills log in as you. Some community skills on ClawHub skip the API and use your browser's X login cookies, so they can act as you. X's automation rules say that kind of automation "may result in the permanent suspension of your account."

If it doesn't work

  • Add or login refuses to run. The local Gateway is still running, so stop it first or add Weir from the Control UI.
  • Saved, but no tools. Check any --include filter, then probe again with openclaw mcp doctor weir --probe.
  • authentication refused (401). Sign out with openclaw mcp logout weir, then sign in again.
  • The agent never calls Weir. The minimal tool profile hides MCP tools; coding and messaging show them.
  • Your key header is ignored. OpenClaw drops a static Authorization header while auth is oauth, so pick one.
  • A search comes back empty. Loosen since or minLikes. An empty search still costs the 1-credit minimum.

When not to use Weir

  • Your agent has to post, reply or DM. Weir is read-only, so use the xurl skill with your own X app.
  • You want your private data. Weir reads public posts, not your bookmarks, DMs or home timeline.
  • Price per post matters most. TwitterAPI.io lists $0.15 per 1,000 tweets as of October 2026, below our $5 pack.
  • You need a guarantee. Weir isn't licensed by X or affiliated with it, so access can change.

FAQ

Is there an OpenClaw Twitter skill?

Yes: OpenClaw ships an xurl skill that uses X's official API with your own developer app. ClawHub also lists community X skills, and some of them log in with your browser cookies. An MCP server like Weir is a third route that needs no X account.

How do I add an MCP server in OpenClaw?

Run openclaw mcp add <name> --url <url> --transport streamable-http, with --auth oauth if the server signs you in. Or use Settings, then MCP, in the Control UI. Then run openclaw mcp doctor <name> --probe to prove it connects.

Can OpenClaw post tweets through Weir?

No. Weir only reads public X data, so nothing can post, like or follow through it. To post, use the xurl skill with your own X developer app.

What can OpenClaw do with my Weir sign-in?

By default it can read public Reddit and X data and check your usage, nothing more. The connection shows under API keys in your Weir dashboard. Revoke it there and OpenClaw loses access at once.

Does it work when OpenClaw runs on a VPS?

Yes: run openclaw mcp login weir on the server and open the printed link on any device. If the redirect can't reach the server, copy the code from your browser's address bar and pass it with --code. A key header skips sign-in entirely.
