Gemini Spark Custom MCP Server: Add X (Twitter) and Reddit
Gemini Spark, now called Task, takes a custom MCP server by URL. Add Weir for X (Twitter) and Reddit data, with Google's US-only rules, sign-in and costs.

Gemini Spark can use a custom MCP server: you add its URL as a custom app in Gemini's Connected Apps settings, then sign in.
Google has since renamed Spark to Task, and custom apps now work in regular chats too. This guide connects Weir's server, so Gemini can search X (Twitter) and Reddit for you. We run Weir.
This is the URL you paste:
https://api.weirapp.io/mcp
How to add a custom MCP server to Gemini Spark
You set it up once in the Gemini web app, and it then works in the mobile app too. Google's custom-app page, checked on 26 October 2026, lists what you need:
- A US location, and age 18 or over. Custom apps aren't offered anywhere else yet.
- A personal Google Account. Work and school accounts can't add custom apps.
- Keep Activity turned on, with Gemini set to English.
- A free Weir account. No card, and no key to copy.
- Open Connected AppsOn a computer, go to gemini.google.com/apps. In the new menu, that's Customize, then Connectors.
- Find Custom appsUse the field that says Add a custom app link to get started, or click Add a custom app.
- Paste the URLEnter https://api.weirapp.io/mcp, leave Advanced features closed, and click Next.
- Approve WeirWeir's consent screen opens. Sign in, check the request and click Authorize.
- Check itIn a chat, type @, pick Weir and ask "What's my Weir usage?" That call is free.
Leave Advanced features alone. Google says to enter credentials there only when a server lacks Dynamic Client Registration. Weir supports it, so Gemini registers itself.
Older menus say Settings, then Connected Apps. Google's custom-app page still shows that path, and it links the settings as gemini.google.com/apps.
Gemini Spark is now Task: what changed for MCP
Google renamed Spark in October 2026. Its help page now answers "Where did Spark go?" with "we renamed it Task to make it easier to understand."
You find it in the Chat and Task toggle next to the prompt box. Custom apps and tasks have separate rules, so a task that uses Weir needs both columns:
| Rule | Custom app | Task (was Spark) |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | None listed | Google AI Pro or Ultra |
| Where | US only | Not in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Nigeria |
| Age | 18 or over | 18 or over |
| Account | Personal only | Personal only |
| Apps | Web and mobile | Web, mobile and Mac |
| Also | Keep Activity on | Keep Activity, Personal Intelligence |
So in practice, you need a US location and a Pro or Ultra plan to run Weir inside a task. Google doesn't list the Mac app for custom apps yet.
What to ask Gemini once Weir is connected
Start each prompt with @Weir, as Google suggests, so Gemini uses the app instead of a web search.
Put a number in every prompt, too. Without one, Weir's search tools return 10 results.
A quick check: 0 credits.
@Weir What's my Weir usage?
This week on X: about 11 credits.
@Weir Find the 10 most-liked X posts about Gemini from the last 7 days.
One line each, with links.
A daily digest as a task: about 21 credits a run. Switch the toggle to Task, then paste:
Every morning at 8, use @Weir to get the last 24 hours of posts from
@GoogleDeepMind and @OpenAI. Skip reposts, 20 posts at most. Send me
the 5 most-liked, with links.
Reddit this week: about 31 credits.
@Weir What did r/Bard say about Gemini this week? Get 10 posts, with links.
These prompts map to Weir's search_x and search_reddit tools. X search returns reposts unless told not to, so keep "skip reposts" in. Our X advanced search operators guide lists more filters you can name.
What it costs
Two meters run: Weir credits for the data, and Gemini's own usage limits for the work. Google says tasks use compute-based limits that rise with your Google AI plan.
Weir bills a credit per call plus a credit per X post, or 3 per Reddit post. Failed calls cost nothing.
Your 5,000 free credits each month cover that digest about eight times over. Paid packs start at $5 and never expire, as of October 2026. Every rate is on our pricing page.
Watch scheduled tasks. Google says Gemini confirms write actions with you, but Weir's tools only read, so a task may call them without asking. Ask Gemini to report the cost, since every Weir result carries the credits it used.
If it doesn't work
- You see no Custom apps section. It needs a US location and a personal Google Account, so check those first.
- Gemini searches the web instead. Type @ and pick Weir, so the prompt goes to the app.
- You approve Weir, but the app never appears. Start over once, then email support@weirapp.io; developers on Google's AI forum report the same stall with other servers.
- A tool returns
402. Your Weir credits ran out, and retrying won't help. Add credits or wait for next month's grant. - Calls stop with
429. The free tier allows 30 requests a minute, so wait a moment and retry.
When not to use Weir
- Gemini has to post on X. Weir only reads public data, so it can't post, like or follow.
- You're outside the US. Custom apps aren't offered there yet, so use Weir from Antigravity or Claude instead.
- You want private data, such as DMs or bookmarks. Weir reads public posts only.
- You need a guarantee. Weir isn't licensed by or affiliated with X or Reddit, so access can change.
FAQ
Can Gemini Spark use MCP?
Yes. Google added custom apps by MCP server URL to Spark on 29 June 2026. Spark is now called Task, and custom apps also work in regular chats, on the web and in the mobile app.
Is Gemini Spark custom MCP available outside the US?
Not yet. Google's help page says you must be in the US to connect a custom app, as of 26 October 2026. Tasks reach many more countries, but without custom apps. Elsewhere, connect Weir to a client such as Claude instead.
Can I use an API key or header instead of signing in?
Not in Gemini, going by Google's help page. It describes sign-in only, with Dynamic Client Registration or credentials entered under Advanced features. Weir supports Dynamic Client Registration, so you just approve Weir once.
Do I need Google AI Pro or Ultra?
For tasks, yes. Google lists a Pro or Ultra plan for them. Its custom-app page lists no plan at all, so a custom app may work in a regular chat without one.
Does Google check custom MCP servers?
No. Google says it doesn't control, monitor or secure third-party MCP servers, and that Gemini may share details from your chat with them. You can revoke Gemini's access to Weir under API keys in your Weir dashboard.
