Hermes Agent Twitter: Read X via MCP, No X Developer App

Give Hermes Agent Twitter access with Weir's MCP server: one hermes mcp add command, an OAuth sign-in, a real X search, and its cost next to xurl.

To give Hermes Agent Twitter access with no X developer app, add Weir's MCP server with one command and sign in once.

Hermes Agent is the open-source agent from Nous Research. With Weir connected, it can search X (Twitter) and read posts, threads and profiles from the CLI or any chat app it runs in. We run Weir.

hermes mcp add --url https://api.weirapp.io/mcp --auth oauth weir

Hermes Agent Twitter setup: hermes mcp add

Hermes ships with MCP support, so Weir connects by URL with nothing extra to install. You need Hermes and a free Weir account.

  1. Add WeirRun the command above. Hermes saves Weir under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml.
  2. Sign inHermes finds Weir's sign-in by itself and opens your browser. Sign in to Weir and approve.
  3. Test ithermes mcp test weir connects, lists the tools it found, and exits.
  4. Load the toolsStart a new session, or type /reload-mcp in one that's running.
  5. Ask the free question"What's my Weir usage?" Hermes calls mcp_weir_get_usage, which costs nothing.

Hermes names each Weir tool mcp_weir_<tool>, so search_x shows up as mcp_weir_search_x.

Only want X? Add a filter to the weir entry in config.yaml, then run /reload-mcp. Hermes then loads Weir's X tools and skips the Reddit ones:

mcp_servers:
  weir:
    url: "https://api.weirapp.io/mcp"
    auth: oauth
    tools:
      include: ["search_x*", "get_x_*", "get_usage"]

Fewer tools also means a shorter tool list in every prompt your model reads.

Yes. Hermes treats Weir's tools like its own and picks one whenever your question needs X.

You ask, in Telegram or the CLI: "What has @NousResearch posted about Hermes this month? Newest first."

Hermes calls mcp_weir_search_x with query, fromUsers and since. Here is that call, run through Weir's MCP server on 22 October 2026:

→ search_x {"query": "Hermes", "fromUsers": ["NousResearch"], "since": "2026-10-01T00:00:00Z",
            "sort": "latest", "onlyOriginal": true, "limit": 5}

Nous announced v0.22.0 on X with a link to its changelog, so this search doubles as a release feed.

Start with a small limit like this one: five posts show whether your filters work before you pay for more.

Make it weekly. Ask from the chat where you want it: "Send me this every Monday at 9." Hermes's cron scheduler runs the prompt and replies in that same chat.

Hermes Agent MCP OAuth: tokens, keys and servers

Hermes signs in with OAuth 2.1 and keeps the token for you.

  • No client to register. Hermes registers itself with Weir, so you never copy a client ID or secret.
  • Tokens stay on your machine. They live in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/weir.json, and Hermes refreshes them on its own.
  • You can cut it off. Weir lists the connection under API keys in your dashboard, and revoking it there stops Hermes.

Hermes on a VPS? Your browser can't reach the server's callback, so approve anyway and copy the URL the browser ends up on. Paste it back at the terminal prompt. Weir has no device-code login, so skip --flow device.

Rather use a key? Put WEIR_API_KEY=weir_live_... in ~/.hermes/.env, and swap auth: oauth for a header:

mcp_servers:
  weir:
    url: "https://api.weirapp.io/mcp"
    headers:
      Authorization: "Bearer ${WEIR_API_KEY}"

Hermes fills in the key when it connects, and warns you if the variable is missing.

Weir or the xurl skill: what each costs

Weir bills a credit per call plus a credit per X post, and failed calls are free.

6credits for the release watch above
21credits for a 20-post search
0credits to check your balance
5,000free credits each month

A weekly release watch uses about 30 credits a month, well inside the free grant.

Paid packs start at $5 and never expire. Across 1,000 posts, the routes compare like this:

Reading 1,000 X posts in 20-post searches, as of October 2026
X API, via the xurl skill$5.00
Weir, $5 pack$0.21
Weir, $1,000 pack$0.105

The Weir bars include the credit each 20-post call costs. See pricing for every rate.

The xurl skill comes bundled with Hermes. It drives xurl, X's official command-line tool, with your own developer app, client ID and secret. X's pricing page lists $0.005 per post read as of October 2026.

We run Weir, so weigh our view. Read with Weir, and keep the xurl skill for posting, which Weir can't do. Skip any tool that wants your X login cookies: X's automation rules say non-API automation "may result in the permanent suspension of your account."

If it doesn't work

  • Sign-in times out inside a session. A running session gives OAuth only 30 seconds after a config change, so run hermes mcp login weir from a fresh terminal.
  • No mcp_weir_ tools in the session. Type /reload-mcp, then check enabled and any include filter.
  • The gateway stops using Weir. A dead token parks the server with a warning in gateway.log, so run hermes mcp login weir once.
  • A "not set in this profile's .env" warning. Move WEIR_API_KEY into ~/.hermes/.env, where Hermes looks for secrets.
  • A 402 error. Your Weir account is out of credits. Retrying won't help, so add credits or wait for next month.

When not to use Weir

  • Hermes has to post, reply or DM. Weir only reads, so use the bundled xurl skill.
  • You want your own bookmarks or DMs. Weir reads public X data only.
  • Price per post matters most. TwitterAPI.io lists $0.15 per 1,000 tweets as of October 2026, under our $5 pack.
  • Access must never change. Weir isn't licensed by X or affiliated with it.

FAQ

Is there a Hermes Agent Twitter skill?

Yes: Hermes bundles an xurl skill that uses X's official API with your own developer app, at X's rates. Third-party X plugins exist too. Weir is an MCP server rather than a skill, and it needs no X account.

How do I add an MCP server to Hermes Agent?

Run hermes mcp add --url <url> --auth oauth <name> for a server that signs you in. Or add a url and headers entry under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. Then run hermes mcp test <name> to see its tools.

Does Hermes Agent support MCP OAuth?

Yes. Set auth: oauth and Hermes handles discovery, PKCE, the token exchange and refresh. For servers like Weir it also registers itself, so there's no client to set up first.

Can Hermes post tweets through Weir?

No. Weir only reads public X data, so Hermes can't post, like or follow through it. For posting, set up the bundled xurl skill with your own X app.

OpenClaw vs Hermes Agent: which works with Weir?

Both do. OpenClaw adds Weir with openclaw mcp add, and Hermes with hermes mcp add. The tools and credits are the same, as the OpenClaw guide shows.
