Cover image: Premium is not the API

X Premium does not include API access in 2026: no tier, not even Premium+, comes with X API keys or credits.

This is for you if you pay for Premium on X (Twitter) and want to build a bot, an app or a data pull. You get what Premium includes, where API access comes from, and what reading posts costs.

If you already have a developer app, this returns its API credit balance, which is separate from Premium:

curl "https://api.x.com/2/usage/credits" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $BEARER_TOKEN"
$0of X API credit in any Premium tier
$8a month for X Premium in the US
$0.005to read one post on the X API

Does X Premium include API access?

No: X sells Premium and the X API as two separate products, with separate bills.

X's Help Center page on Premium describes Basic, Premium and Premium+ and their main features. It never mentions the API, API keys or credits, as of October 2026.

On the developer side, X's getting-access page starts at console.x.com with your X account. Its pricing page says you pay only for what you use, with no subscriptions.

What does X Premium get me, then?

X's Help Center lists three tiers of features inside the X app. Here are their US web prices:

  • Basic, $3 a month. Edit posts, longer posts and videos, text formatting and bookmark folders.
  • Premium, $8 a month. Adds the checkmark, about half the ads, Media Studio and the right to apply for creator payouts.
  • Premium+, $40 a month. Adds X Pro, the biggest reply boost and no ads in most places.

X Pro gives you live timelines and advanced search. It's a screen you use, not an API your code can call.

Why do people think Premium includes the API?

Because the old Twitter API also had a tier called Premium, with Premium Search and the Account Activity API.

X deprecated it on 20 April 2023, in a post on its developer forum. It told commercial users to apply for Enterprise instead.

Old guides still mention that tier, which keeps the mix-up alive.

Name What it is API access Status, October 2026
X Premium, three tiers A subscription for the X app No On sale, $3 to $40/month
Premium API, v1.1 An old developer tier Yes: search, Account Activity Deprecated April 2023
X API, pay-per-use Today's developer API Yes Billed per use

Only the last row gets you data today.

How do you get X API access and an API key?

You get keys in the X Developer Console, and none of X's steps for it involve Premium:

  1. Sign inGo to console.x.com with your X account and accept the Developer Agreement.
  2. Create an appGive it a name, a description and a use case.
  3. Save your keysX shows the API key, secret and bearer token only once.
  4. Buy creditsX says requests fail until you purchase credits.

New pay-per-use accounts can earn starter credits, up to $70 in total. X's free-credits page lists $20 after your first purchase, plus a match of your first auto-recharge.

Those free credits expire three months after you get them.

What does X API access cost in 2026?

Reading is where the money goes. X's pricing page lists $0.005 per post read and $0.010 per profile, as of October 2026.

Reading 10,000 posts, October 2026
X API$50
TwitterAPI.io$1.50
Weir, $5 packabout $2.10

Pay-per-use accounts can read up to 3 million posts a month.

When your balance hits zero, X says requests fail until you buy more credits. Our X API 402 guide shows the fix.

Every rate is in our X API pricing guide, and the X API cost calculator prices your own job.

The read-only route: skip the X API

If you only read public posts, third-party APIs do the job for cents per 1,000.

We run one of them, Weir, so weigh this section knowing that. This search reads @XDevelopers' latest posts:

curl -X POST https://api.weirapp.io/v1/x/search \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $WEIR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"fromUsers": ["XDevelopers"], "onlyOriginal": true, "limit": 5}'

We ran it through Weir's MCP tool on 22 October 2026. It returned 5 posts for 6 credits, and one was X's own offer of API credits:

{
  "text": "Start building on the X API with $70 in free credits! 🤑 ...",
  "createdAt": "2026-10-02T23:43:18.000Z",
  "likeCount": 426,
  "viewCount": 56693
}

That post promises $20 for adding a card.

X's free-credits page has since changed: from 13 October 2026, a card alone no longer counts.

Weir gives you 5,000 free credits a month with no card. TwitterAPI.io is cheaper at small volumes, at $0.15 per 1,000 tweets.

When not to use Weir

  • You need to post, reply or send DMs. Weir only reads; writing needs X's own API.
  • You need a contract with X itself. Weir isn't licensed by X, so access can change.
  • Price per post is all that matters. TwitterAPI.io charges less than our smaller packs.

FAQ

Is there an X Premium API key?

No: Premium never gives you API keys. You get them at console.x.com when you create an app, and X shows them only once. Reading data then needs credits.

Does X Premium+ include API access?

No. Premium+ costs $40 a month in the US, adds X Pro and removes most ads. X's Premium page lists no API access or credits for it, so API reads are billed separately.

Do I need X Premium to use the X API?

No. X's getting-access page asks for your X account, a note on your use case and an accepted Developer Agreement. Premium never comes up, but you need credits to read data.

What was the X Premium API?

A tier of the old Twitter API, with Premium Search and the Account Activity API. X deprecated it on 20 April 2023 and pointed commercial users to Enterprise. Guides that still mention it are out of date.
