Nitter Alternative 2026: Is Nitter Dead? We Tested 10 Sites

Looking for a Nitter alternative? We tested nitter.net, xcancel and 8 instances on 28 October 2026: what still loads, and how to read X with no X account.

Cover image: Where Nitter went

There is no reliable Nitter alternative left in October 2026: nitter.net shows only a legal notice, and xcancel.com is offline.

We tested 10 Nitter sites on 28 October, and only one loaded.

This guide is for you if you used Nitter to read X (Twitter) without an account or without being tracked. You get what happened, a dated status table, and the routes that still work. We run Weir, one of those routes.

If your AI agent has Weir connected, paste this to read an account with no X login:

Use Weir to get @NASA's 3 latest posts with their dates, like counts and media links.

What happened to Nitter?

X Corp. sent the Nitter project cease and desist letters, and the maintainer took the main site down.

Nitter's own README and nitter.net give the dates. Letters came on 24 August 2026, with a second on 8 September. They demanded "a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository."

  1. 24 AugustX Corp. sends the first cease and desist letter.
  2. Early SeptemberNitter and xcancel come back online for a few days.
  3. 8 SeptemberA second letter repeats the demands.
  4. 15 SeptemberTechCrunch reports xcancel suspended "until further notice."
  5. 9 OctoberGitHub shows the Nitter repo archived and read-only.
  6. 10 OctoberThe maintainer says he is seeking funding and legal help.

TechCrunch reported that X's letter alleged "unlawful use and circumvention" of its API and data.

The maintainer's update of 10 October says plainly: "Nitter currently has no legal counsel."

There is a second reason instances are rare. Nitter's own wiki says it "requires real accounts to authenticate API requests." So each instance runs on X accounts that its owner supplies, and X can shut those down.

Nitter instances list: what loaded on 28 October 2026

Most of the instances on Nitter's public list did not load for us. We opened @NASA's profile on each site, then one NASA post with its replies wherever the profile worked or blocked us.

We used a plain page fetch with no browser tricks. When a site showed a bot check or a 403, we wrote it down and moved on.

Site What we opened What happened
nitter.net Profile, post Maintainer's legal notice only
xcancel.com Profile, post HTTP 451, unavailable for legal reasons
nitter.poast.org Profile Domain no longer resolves
nitter.catsarch.com Profile Domain no longer resolves
nitter.privacyredirect.com Profile Redirect, then 404 not found
nitter.tiekoetter.com Profile, post Blocked our automated check
nuku.trabun.org, nitter.kareem.one, nitter.space Profile Blocked our automated check (403)
One instance not on the wiki list Profile, post Loaded: profile, post, 36 replies

So 0 of the 7 sites on the wiki's public list showed us NASA's posts.

Three of them blocked our checker, so they may still open in a normal browser.

The one instance that worked is a small volunteer site that we found linked in Reddit posts. We don't name it. X has sent takedown letters to instances, and a site like that can vanish any day.

Is Nitter back? Not on nitter.net or xcancel

No. Both came back for a few days in early September 2026, then went dark again.

On 28 October, every nitter.net page we opened showed the same notice, even a direct post link.

xcancel answered both a profile and a post with HTTP 451. That code means a site is withholding a page for legal reasons.

If you search "nitter down" or "nitter and xcancel", that's why.

Your browser, extension or redirect setting is not broken. The sites are off.

How to view Twitter without an account in 2026

X still shows single posts and profiles to logged-out visitors, though search needs a log-in. Here are the routes that need no X account:

  • Open a direct link. In our 22 October test, a logged-out x.com profile showed the bio and 5 newest posts.
  • Read an embed. X's publish.x.com returns a post's text and date for any website to show.
  • Search with Google. Type site:x.com/NASA and a word to find posts it has indexed.
  • Use an RSS service. Feed services such as RSS.app still build X feeds, as our Twitter RSS feed guide explains.
  • Ask an AI agent with an API. It reads posts, replies and media links for you.

Our guide to searching Twitter without an account tests the first three in detail. On 28 October, x.com and publish.x.com both blocked our page fetcher with HTTP 402. That is our tool being refused, so we lean on the earlier test for those rows.

The Weir route: read X through an agent, with no X account

Weir is an API for public X data. You sign up for Weir, not X, and your AI agent or script asks it for posts.

It is not a Nitter replacement, and there's no page to scroll.

You ask Claude or ChatGPT a question, and it calls Weir for the data. Our Claude setup guide shows how to connect it.

We ran the prompt above through Weir's MCP server on 28 October 2026, then asked for replies to one post:

→ get_x_user_posts {"user": "NASA", "limit": 3}

← 3 replies · 4 credits

The 23 October post leads because it is pinned, and Weir puts a pinned post first.

The video link plays in any browser, so you can watch Twitter media without an account.

The replies call cost 4 credits. Two replies came from personal accounts, so we leave them out here, and one was NASA answering a fan.

6credits for 3 posts plus the profile
4credits for 3 replies
5,000free credits each month, no card

For a script, the same call is one GET request. This uses only Python's standard library:

import json, os, urllib.request

req = urllib.request.Request(
    "https://api.weirapp.io/v1/x/users/NASA/posts?limit=3",
    headers={"Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["WEIR_API_KEY"]},
)
with urllib.request.urlopen(req) as res:
    print("credits:", res.headers["x-credits-charged"])
    for post in json.load(res)["data"]:
        print(post["createdAt"][:10], post["text"][:60])

Each post costs 1 credit, a profile 2, and each call 1 more. To save every reply under a post, see our tweet replies export guide.

When not to use Weir

  • You just want to browse for free. Open x.com links logged out, or make a free X account. Weir has no feed to scroll.
  • You want to read with no sign-up at all. Weir needs a Weir account, even on the free plan.
  • You follow protected accounts. Weir reads public posts only.
  • You want to post or like. Weir is read-only.

Weir isn't licensed by X, so access can change.

FAQ

Is Nitter dead?

Mostly, yes. nitter.net shows only the maintainer's legal notice, and GitHub shows the repo archived on 9 October 2026. At least one volunteer instance still runs: 1 of the 10 Nitter sites we tried showed posts on 28 October.

Is Nitter back?

No. Nitter and xcancel returned for a few days in early September 2026, then went offline after X's second letter. On 28 October, xcancel answered with HTTP 451 and nitter.net showed its notice. The maintainer says he is seeking legal help.

What Nitter alternative do Reddit users suggest?

In Reddit posts from October 2026 that we searched with Weir, people still paste links to Nitter instances next to X links. We found no thread that agreed on one replacement. Expect any linked instance to break without warning.

How can I view Twitter without an account?

Open a post or profile link directly, and X shows it logged out. For search, use Google with site:x.com. For replies, threads and media links, an AI agent with an API like Weir reads them for you, with a Weir account but no X account.

Can I see Twitter comments without an account?

Only a few. A logged-out x.com post shows some replies, and the Replies tab asks you to log in. Through Weir, one call returns a page of replies, often 30 to 40, at 1 credit each plus the call.
