Weir is a Meltwater alternative for developers: an API that returns public Reddit and X posts per result, with no 12-month contract.
Meltwater sells media, social and AI intelligence to PR and marketing teams, through sales. For most of those teams, it's the better pick. We run Weir, so every Meltwater fact here comes from Meltwater's own pages, checked on 22 October 2026.
This call returns Meltwater's three newest original posts on X (Twitter):

Meltwater alternative or Meltwater: which fits you?
They do different jobs. Meltwater is a platform your team works in every day; Weir is a data feed your code calls.
| Meltwater | Weir | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | PR, comms and marketing teams | Developers and AI agents |
| Covers | News, social, AI visibility | Reddit and X |
| Price | Contact Sales, yearly contracts | Published, per result |
| API and MCP | Enterprise and Agency plans | Every account, free included |
| X post text via API | Post ID and author only | Full text |
| Trial | Guided demo only | 5,000 free credits a month |
Pick by the job:
- Your PR team tracks press coverage: choose Meltwater. Weir has no news and no media relations tools.
- You build a feature or an agent on Reddit or X data: choose Weir. Each post arrives as JSON with its full text.
- You want an AI assistant to read your coverage: either works. Meltwater's MCP reads your Meltwater data; Weir's reads public Reddit and X.
- You can't sign a yearly contract: choose Weir. It's prepaid, from $5, with no term.
Meltwater pricing: every plan says "Contact Sales"
Meltwater's pricing page lists four plans and no prices.

Its FAQ answers "How much does Meltwater cost?" with "tailored pricing rather than a one-size-fits-all list." The other answers set the terms, as of October 2026:
- What sets the quote: sources, regions, data volume, users, integrations and support.
- Contract: most deals are annual, with a 12-month minimum.
- Trial: there's no self-serve free trial, only a guided demo.
- Setup: complex setups may carry a one-time onboarding charge.
- Support: every customer gets 24/7 chat and email, plus a success manager.
Meltwater's own pricing guide, on its blog, goes one step further. It gives "indicative" starting points in US dollars:
Meltwater says these "should not be interpreted as fixed prices, quotes, or offers." A scoping call sets the real price, and the guide gives no figure for Agency.
Which Meltwater plans include the API?
The pricing table ticks "API & MCP Integrations" only on Enterprise and Agency. Meltwater's guide agrees: "Enterprise adds full API access, MCP connections."
The developer docs add a wrinkle. They say most core packages "now include an inclusive API allowance," under different package names. As of October 2026, that allowance covers:
- 30,000 documents a month, shared across searches, exports and streams.
- 50 exports a month, plus 50 analytics calls a day.
- 12 months of historical data.
More than that needs a separate Insights API package. The docs' FAQ sends you to "your account manager to check if your package has access."
What does the Meltwater API return?
It returns mentions matched by your saved searches, plus analytics, from news and social sources. The docs say "you will need to start with a Saved Search."
- Search and export: mentions over a time window, with sentiment, language and key phrases added.
- Streams: new mentions pushed to your URL, if your API package includes them.
- Analytics: counts and breakdowns, at up to 100 calls a minute.
- Meltwater MCP: a remote server that gives AI agents your Meltwater data, at 60 requests a minute.
- No SDK: Meltwater offers an OpenAPI spec, so you generate your own client.
What 30,000 posts a month cost on Weir
Meltwater's inclusive allowance is 30,000 documents a month, so we priced that volume on Weir: 20,000 X posts and 10,000 Reddit posts.
- X: at about 20 posts a page, that's 1,000 calls. You pay 20,000 credits for posts and 1,000 for calls.
- Reddit: at 100 posts a call, that's 100 calls. Posts cost 30,000 credits, and calls add 100.
- Total: 51,100 credits. The free 5,000 leave 46,100 to buy.
- Price: at the $20 pack's rate of 120,000 credits, that comes to $7.68 a month.
Twelve months at that rate is about $92. Here it is next to Meltwater's starting points:
These prices don't buy the same thing. Meltwater's covers news, social, AI visibility, analytics and a success manager. Weir's buys Reddit and X posts alone, and scoring them is your code's job.
When to choose Meltwater
Choose Meltwater if your PR or comms team, not code, acts on the data, or if you need news as well as social.
Good
- News, social listening and AI visibility tracking in one platform
- Media relations tools on every plan
- Mira AI, dashboards, alerts and reports
- An API and MCP server on Enterprise and Agency
- 24/7 support and a success manager for every client
Watch out
- No list prices: every plan goes through sales
- Indicative starts from $10,000 a year, and $130,000 for Enterprise
- Most contracts run at least 12 months
- X posts leave the API as IDs, without their text
When to choose Weir
Weir fits developers who want the posts themselves, in code or an AI agent. Our social listening API page shows the full feature set.
Good
- Full post text, counts and authors as JSON
- 5,000 free credits every month, no card
- Search any keyword or account, with no saved search first
- Monitors that send only new posts, by signed webhook
- A remote MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor
- Prepaid packs from $5 that never expire
Watch out
- Reddit and X only: no news, broadcast or blogs
- No sentiment, reach or dashboards
- Monitors run daily on the free tier, hourly at best
We ran the search at the top of this page on 22 October 2026. It returned three posts for 4 credits. The newest, trimmed:
{
"id": "2112921944521585087",
"text": "Each year, the Global Digital Reports bring together authoritative data from leading research firms, social platforms and government sources. ...",
"createdAt": "2026-10-21T15:00:22.000Z",
"author": { "username": "Meltwater", "followersCount": 24745 },
"likeCount": 0,
"viewCount": 94
}
That text field is the part Meltwater's API leaves out for X. Our guide to a Reddit and X brand mention monitor shows how to watch a brand this way.
When not to use Weir
- Your PR team needs news coverage and media relations. Weir has neither.
- You want dashboards and reports with no code. Meltwater is built for that.
- You need sentiment out of the box. Weir returns posts, and you score them yourself.
- You need to post or reply. Weir is read-only.
FAQ
How much does Meltwater cost?
Meltwater lists no prices, and every plan says "Contact Sales." As of October 2026, its own pricing guide gives indicative starts of $10,000 a year for Starter, $25,000 for Pro and $130,000 for Enterprise. A scoping call sets the real quote.
Does Meltwater have an API?
Yes. The Meltwater API at api.meltwater.com searches, exports and streams mentions from your saved searches, with analytics and an MCP server. The pricing page ticks it on Enterprise and Agency. The docs say some core packages get a smaller allowance, so ask your account manager.
Does Meltwater offer a free trial?
No. Meltwater's FAQ says it "does not offer a self-serve free trial." You can book a guided demo or try its product tours instead. Weir's free tier gives 5,000 credits a month with no card.
What is a good Meltwater alternative for developers?
If you want raw posts rather than a platform, Weir returns Reddit and X posts as JSON and charges per result. For a cheaper dashboard, compare Brand24; for another enterprise suite, see Brandwatch. Weir isn't affiliated with Reddit or X.
