Cline MCP Settings: Add a Remote X (Twitter) Server

Add a remote server to cline_mcp_settings.json: the streamableHttp entry, Authenticate sign-in, auto-approve, the marketplace and a real X search's cost.

Cline MCP setup for a remote server is one entry in cline_mcp_settings.json, with "type": "streamableHttp" and the server's URL.

This guide adds Weir, so Cline can search X (Twitter) and read posts, threads and profiles while it codes. Weir only reads, so it never posts as you. We run Weir.

  "mcpServers": {
    "weir": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "https://api.weirapp.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Cline MCP setup: add Weir in five steps

You need Cline in VS Code and a free Weir account. We read Cline 4.1.25, the version Open VSX has listed since 16 October 2026.

  1. Open MCP ServersClick the stacked-server icon at the top of the Cline panel.
  2. Add the serverOn Remote Servers, enter weir and the URL, keep Streamable HTTP and click Add Server.
  3. Or paste the JSONOn Configure, click Configure MCP Servers and add the entry above.
  4. Sign inClick Authenticate under weir, then approve on Weir's consent screen.
  5. Ask the free question"Use weir: what's my usage?" It calls get_usage, which costs nothing.

Where is cline_mcp_settings.json? In Cline 4.1.25, the VS Code extension and the CLI share ~/.cline/data/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json. Older guides point to a folder inside VS Code's globalStorage. Cline's source copies servers from there into the new file.

Keep the file private. After sign-in, it holds your tokens under the server's oauth key.

Cline MCP config: the keys a remote server takes

Cline's docs and its 4.1.25 schema accept these keys on a remote entry:

Key Weir's value What it does
type "streamableHttp" Picks the transport; "sse" is the old
url https://api.weirapp.io/mcp The server's endpoint
headers Authorization with a key Only for the key route below
disabled false true keeps the entry but turns it off
timeout 60 Seconds per request; default 60, max 3600
autoApprove [] A per-tool list, now hidden (see below)

Weir needs only type and url; the rest are optional.

Rather use a key? It suits machines where nobody can click through a browser. Create one under API keys in your Weir dashboard:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "weir": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "https://api.weirapp.io/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer weir_live_your_key" },
      "timeout": 60
    }
  }
}

From the Cline CLI, Weir's coding agent docs give one command:

cline mcp add weir https://api.weirapp.io/mcp --transport http --header "Authorization: Bearer $WEIR_API_KEY" --yes

Does Cline support OAuth for remote MCP servers?

Yes. When a server answers 401, Cline 4.1.25 marks it as needing sign-in and shows an Authenticate button.

  • Your browser opens. Cline waits up to 10 minutes for the reply on a local port, 1456 to 1461.
  • There's no client ID to paste. Cline signs itself up as "Cline", so Weir should list the link as "Cline (MCP)" under API keys.
  • The CLI shares the tokens. They go into the shared settings file, and the cline mcp menu has an Authorize OAuth action.

We haven't run Cline's sign-in against Weir. If it fails, switch to the key setup.

How to approve or auto-approve Cline MCP tools

Cline asks before each MCP call unless you turn on Use MCP servers under Auto Approve.

Cline's docs suggest leaving it off until you have a specific reason.

The docs still show a per-tool autoApprove list. But a comment in Cline 4.1.25's source says approval now runs through that one switch, so the per-tool checkboxes are hidden.

Want a shorter tool list? A Weir key made without Reddit access lists no Reddit tools, Weir's docs say.

Can Cline read X (Twitter)? A worked task

Yes. Say you want Cline's latest news before you update. Ask:

Use weir: what has @cline posted on X this month? Skip replies and reposts.

Cline should pick search_x. We ran that call through Weir's MCP server on 23 October 2026:

→ search_x {"fromUsers": ["cline"], "query": "-filter:nativeretweets",
            "onlyOriginal": true, "since": "2026-10-01T00:00:00Z", "limit": 2}
← 2 posts · 3 credits (1 + 2 × 1) · nextCursor set
  Oct 21 733 likes "We're about to see a breakout in local model capabilities..."
  Oct 20 89 likes "Use the Goal plugin in Cline Desktop..."

X search returns reposts by default. -filter:nativeretweets drops them, and onlyOriginal drops replies.

3credits for our 2-post search
11credits for a 10-post search
0credits for get_usage
5,000free Weir credits every month

Weir bills 1 credit per call plus 1 per X post, and failed calls are free. Packs start at $5 for 25,000 credits and never expire, as of October 2026. Every rate is on our pricing page.

What happened to the Cline MCP marketplace?

Cline took the MCP Marketplace out of the VS Code extension in June 2026, in pull request #11217.

Version 4.1.25 shows only the Remote Servers and Configure tabs. Here is where the marketplace went:

  • The catalog moved online. Cline's GitHub Pages catalog listed 149 MCP servers on 18 September 2026.
  • The CLI installs from it. Remote entries use cline mcp install <name> --transport http <url>.
  • Cline Desktop shows it too. Cline's own post from 20 October points to Customize > Marketplace.
  • Weir isn't listed. Add it as a custom remote server, as above. New entries arrive as pull requests to the cline/marketplace repo.

If it doesn't work

  • The server never connects. Check the type line. Weir's docs say Cline can't connect over SSE.
  • Your edits do nothing. You may have opened the old globalStorage copy. Edit the file that Configure MCP Servers opens.
  • The browser can't reach 127.0.0.1:1456. Sign in on the machine that runs Cline, or use a key.
  • Remote Servers is missing. A company admin can block personal remote servers through Cline's remote config.
  • Weir returns 402. Your credits ran out, and retrying won't help.

When not to use Weir

  • Cline has to post, reply or DM. Weir is read-only.
  • You want private data. Weir reads public posts, not your bookmarks, DMs or home timeline.
  • Price per post matters most. TwitterAPI.io lists $0.15 per 1,000 tweets as of October 2026, less than our $5 pack.
  • You need a guarantee. Weir isn't licensed by X or affiliated with it, so access can change.

FAQ

Where is the Cline MCP settings file?

In Cline 4.1.25, it's ~/.cline/data/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json, shared by the VS Code extension and the CLI. Open it from the MCP Servers icon: pick Configure, then Configure MCP Servers. The CLINE_MCP_SETTINGS_PATH variable points Cline at another file.

How do I add a remote MCP server to Cline?

Open MCP Servers, pick Remote Servers, and enter a name and the URL with Streamable HTTP. Or add an entry under mcpServers with "type": "streamableHttp" and a url. Then click Authenticate if the server asks you to sign in.

What's the Cline MCP server configuration for streamable HTTP?

Set "type": "streamableHttp" and url, with optional headers, disabled and timeout. Use "type": "sse" only for old SSE servers. Leaving type out also gives you SSE, a common reason a remote server won't connect.

Can Cline post to X through Weir?

No. Weir only reads public X data, so nothing can post, like or follow through it.
